A Valentine’s Day Message…2012

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Happy Valentines Day to all of my loyal and invaluable readers. I would normally post this on my ministry blog site but I think this message is better coming from my SECP (Self-Employed Creative Professional) blog site for some strange reason. Oh, yes, it is because of the short slide show that accompanies this message. I am taking a few minutes from my other writing and work so that I can write this message. For the past few minutes, I have been reviewing some posts at my Facebook Page and I came across some great Christian songs as well as songs that I grew up with in the 1970s. How long ago was that decade? Yikes, I hate to even think about it. Anyway, this is a Valentine’s Day Message to the greatest of loves in my life. My wife Amy of nearly 11 years (this May) and my Lord and Savior, the Messiah, the Son of God and the Son of Man, Jesus Christ. Loving Jesus Christ is no different than saying I Love God. They are one in the same!

To my wife Amy, I have to say that without, life is meaningless. Times have not been easy but I know that with God, with His Son Jesus Christ, we will get through life unscathed. We have to continue to have faith in Him and He will guide us in the right direction. He brought us together, so there is no doubt that we have to trust in Him to see that we are solid in our love for one another and for Him. It is one in the same. We are one flesh because of Him. I found Jesus because I found you. You did not force Him on me, I found Jesus because I saw Him in you. Your music and the words and the smile on your face every time you sang about Him and spoke to me about Him was just filled with more power than any sunshine could produce here on earth. I love you more and more each and every day and Jesus instills this in me. No matter our situation, no matter our decisions, God is with us and we will prevail. I do know that this is a two way street and that we have to do our share. I have to do my share. I am and always will. May this Valentine’s Day be a new beginning for us. May God lead us back to where we need to be and may He grant us what we deserve. Love you babe!

To Jesus Christ, My Personal Lord and Savior, the Messiah, the Son of God, the Son of Man, King of Kings, I LOVE YOU! You mean the world to me because You are the world. You did something that no one else could possibly ever have done. You came to earth knowing all too well that you would die for our sins and for our transgressions. You knew that You were going to go to the Cross to carry all of humanities problems with You. What greater love is that? You never wavered in Your love for us, so we should never waver in our love for You! How could any human being not believe in You? Granted, they just might have room in their heart for You but just not ready to accept what it is that You did for them and for us. Thank You for what you did Jesus, thank You for who You are Jesus! Thank You Jesus for sticking with me Jesus even though I am not perfect! Thank You Jesus for being everywhere I need You to be!

This week, we should continue to remember what it is that Jesus did for us. We need to say these words for the next 72 hours: “I LOVE YOU JESUS!”

Happy Valentine’s Day!

A Day Out With A Friend

There is nothing like a day out with a good friend.  Last year, my best friend, invited me to attend a photo shoot with him and it was a great day.  The day started off with church, choir practice and then off we went to the photo shoot.  However, before going to the assigned shoot that my friend had, we made a stop in Gwinnett County, Georgia near a man made water fall in a park and we both took plenty of photographs.

A Day in the Park, Henderson Park, Tucker, Georgia February 2011

Writing about photography and how it impacts our lives is one thing.  Showing the pictures with a bit of a story behind them is another.  This is why I started what was to be Photostry by David and now I changed this to Photostry as it combines the two words  Photo and Story.  There is no doubt that photos tell a story and that is what Photostry is all about.  So, for the next few posts, I will be showing some of my better photos and explain a little bit about them.  I can only hope and pray that you like them.  In between at times I will add a post regarding what it is that I can do for you, your family, your business and much more when it comes to photography.  At the same time, I can now offer some video and I will post one or two that I have already done here at WordPress.com as well.

The following slide show represents Sunday, February 27, 2011 when my wife Amy and I spent the afternoon in Henderson Park.  This day was incredible weather wise.  Just a little over a month earlier, Atlanta, Georgia was crippled by a snow and ice storm that lasted nearly a week.  Schools were out and some businesses did not open for nearly a half a week.  It did not take long, as is represented here for the weather to improve and allow such a day that we had.

It is said that if you do not like the weather in Atlanta, stick around a bit, it will change.  Atlanta is known for having four seasons, not just Summer and Winter as most states in the United States have.

The Year in Review by David M. Brown 2011

The Year in Review: 2011

Speakers at the Dekalb Memorial Day Commemoration 2011

Wow! What a year. Two Thousand and Eleven started off pretty tough in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Within a week of the beginning of the year, most of North Georgia had been hit by a massive ice and snow storm practically closing down most of the city and surrounding areas. Just a couple of weeks before, Atlanta had witnessed a white Christmas which is had not seen in years, as well. At the same time, for me, there was no end in sight for that full-time paycheck every two weeks job. It had already been nearly seven months since I was working full-time as a third shift (the graveyard shift) Security Shift supervisor but that came to an end quite abruptly thanks to a situation that was well beyond my control. One thing was for sure, I was kind of glad to get away from the freezing cold nights and the extremely humid and hot summers working outside.

Since the end of my security job I had something going for me that kept me going and in good fashion. I was able to attend church once again and this I was extremely happy and blessed. I love it when I am able to be at church but I find myself in circumstances beyond my control that cause me to have to forgo my attendance and this does not make me too happy. I continue to do my daily devotionals and delve into God’s Word on a daily basis, yet, I have a hard time thinking that this is enough.

Cast and Family Members of Days of Our Lives

I believe in the idea of fellowship, worship and Bible Study and as I find myself in a better situation, I will follow through on my promise to once again return to my home church of Mount Carmel Christian Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia and stay until it is my time to return home.

At the same time, I found myself having to rely on my freelance work as a photographer and a journalist. I am continuing this type of work because I enjoy it. I have enjoyed it for some time now and expect to see it move into a full-time “gig.” I am presently working as an executive car driver as well to help supplement other income.

This year has had its ups and downs. Not being able to attend church not just because of my job but because it is not on a MARTA line and I am without a full-time vehicle. The truck that I bought not long after my mother passed away in 2009 eventually cost me too much to keep it running so I had to sell it for little money. Yet, somehow, I have been able to continue working on my photography and my writing and blogging.

I am continuing to write as an independent writer for the Examiner.com/Atlanta. I have two titles that I write under and they are Atlanta Area Events Photographer and Atlanta Area Military History Examiner. Both of these titles mean a great deal to me and I am looking forward to continuing my writing in 2012 and beyond. Follow these links to my articles and more: Event Photography in Atlanta and Military History in Atlanta.

Since the summer of this year, I have been unable to do a great deal of writing and photography but again this is going to change. Thanks to my wishes coming true with some hard work, I did get better photography equipment and this will now allow me to take better video and stills. I am so looking forward to this. Yet, my greatest wish is that my wife and I begin to have the type of life that we both know we deserve as well as our return, hopefully together, to church on a full-time basis.

I am looking forward to increasing the business with my photography and my writing. I may never make a great deal of money with these great passions of mine but I know that through the Lord I am going to be able to use them to help support my wife and I. What I hope to do in the future is to use my talents in photography and my writing toward helping people learn more about Christianity, my old faith of Judaism and history around the United States of America and should my work take me abroad at times, then so be it. I would certainly not turn that opportunity down. There is so much false information spread about not only the United States but of a number of its allies as well.

So, it is time to take on the rest of 2011 and apply many of the lessons learned this year and to make 2012 a greater year both in the world of photography and independent journalism. It is also a year to make my return to church once and for all and to spend the rest of my life with my church family.

For more about faith, Christianity and my thoughts and writings feel free to visit my other blog: www.missionlighthouseministry.wordpress.com.

To all my loyal readers and to all of my new readers, Happy New Year, God Bless and God Speed to you all.

A Christmas Mes…

A Christmas Message 2011 by David M. Brown

This year has been an especially up and down year.  The great thing about it that made it a great one was that it had more ups than downs.  After losing my job as a security shift supervisor the June before, I found myself in a situation that many found themselves in:  long term, full-time unemployment with no end in site.  It was almost a year later, June 2011 to be exact, before I found the full-time employment that I was looking for.  However, I still continued my passion for free lance photography and writing, so I continued to work in this area.  What did happen, with God’s divine intervention, was I found a job.  It was one that I had done for a while in Washington, D.C. but here in Atlanta, Georgia, turned out to be one that required much more hard work.  I became an independent executive car driver.  I have now been performing this job since June and intertwining my photography and writing as well.

With divine help from God and with the help of my best friend, Alex and his mother, I had a roof over my head since the death of my mother back in June 2009.  My wife, Amy, had to stay with her mother as her father died around the same time my mother did, so I was able to at least live comfortably until I was able to find a job and get back on my feet after taking care of my mother for nearly two years while she fought a terminal illness called Polycythemia Vera which eventually turned into acute leukemia. What was neat about living in Grayson, Georgia was that I was near my Godchildren, who I miss something awful, now that I am back in the Tucker, Georgia area.

One thing that happened after I lost my job in the security industry was one that really made me feel good.  I was able to attend my home church, Mount Carmel Christian Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia.  My wife and I participated in choir being part of the Christmas production in 2010 and then the Easter production of this year.  I still needed a job and continued to look for one that would not interfere with church, yet, this is not always easy.  So, as I said, I found a job as an executive car driver and needing to once again get off my feet, the ability to attend church at all became a nightmare.  Not just because of the job; my only vehicle went on the blink and it just cost way to much to fix, so I sold it for a little bit of money, which I needed.

So, it has nearly been six months and without proper transportation needs, I have been unable to attend church as I want to and this has been an extremely big let down for me.  Church is an integral part of my life and I thoroughly enjoy Bible Study and the worship, services and the choir and the productions that are put on each year.  I do bible study and devotionals on a daily basis and I am always sure to take God’s Word with me each and every day when I am on the road.  I also make sure that I keep up with my writing, which I am presently working on my new book, “10 Days to Christianity,” which is a testimonial to my conversion to the faith.

For the new year, it is my extreme intentions to return to church no matter what it takes for my wife and I to get there.  2012 proves to be a big year for us, all of us, and I believe that we will see how God truly works in our lives.  I believe that with God and His direction, we do not live the lives that we can fully live.  One of the reasons that I feel this to be the case is the way that this Christmas season has gone to this point.  At the time of this posting, my wife and I have already exchanged our gifts and believe it or not, it has been almost ten years since we were able to finish our shopping well before Christmas Eve.  Even though we spent time shopping and buying and giving, love for the Lord is more important than anything.

It is now one hour and seven minutes into Christmas Day and I already feel a big difference.  After a great meal with my family including Doctor Paul Glass, my wife’s boss, it has been a great Christmas, so far.  We still have presents to unwrap and more food to eat, but again, it is more about the birth of a baby in a manger in Israel what this Christmas holiday is all about.  He was born, He preached God’s Word, He taught, He sacrificed Himself for the better of mankind, all mankind.  He went to the Cross which was prophesied in the Old Testament.  It was Jesus Christ who began and holds the New Covenant today.  He died but He lives in us and He is the King of Kings, the Lord and Savior.  HE IS THE MESSIAH!

To all of my Christian brothers and sisters, MERRY CHRISTMAS!  To my Jewish brothers and sisters, HAPPY HANUKAH!  May your Christmas and Hanukah bring new meaning this year to your lives and to your success.  To my home church, Mount Carmel Christian Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia, may 2012 see a great increase in membership including myself and my wife, and to people kind around the globe may the coming year find you on the right path to success and in finding faith and happiness as well.

God Bless and God Speed and Merry Christmas to one and all!

Christmas Season Presents a Time for Great Photography

There is no better time of the year in my eyes, then Christmas Time.  It means a great deal to me and part of it is the opportunity for photographs.

Before going into why Christmas is such a great time to take photographs, I have to tell a brief, funny story.  I have been in photography one way or another since high school as I worked on my high school newspaper both as a reporter and a photographer.  However, one of my favorite times taking photos was when I was at Kennesaw College in Kennesaw, Georgia.  I was part of the Senior Army ROTC program at Kennesaw College.    On one mission, I was part of a 20 hour patrol acting as Soviet aggressors against U.S. Targets.  We were flown by Huey helicopters (six in all) from Grant Field at Georgia Tech to Fort Benning, Georgia, home of the US Rangers and airborne school.  My original assignment as a cadet corporal was to be a combat photographer but something out of the ordinary happened.  As we were disembarking from the helicopter, I managed to drop my camera which was flung over my shoulder and it hit the ground before I did.  It managed to stop working.  It was a Nikon EF and I loved that camera.  I guess this is why I have gone to Canon.  I still managed to get some good 35mm film from the loading of future soldiers at Grant Field and while we were flying at 200 plus miles an hour to Benning.  I had the great opportunity to sit in the Engineer’s seat behind the pilots and wear the same helmet as they did.  All that I have to say here is never get on a fast transport helicopter after eating a Big Mac Meal from McDonald’s (Sorry guys, never did get to clean up after myself).  Lo and behold, I did get to finish the patrol as an M-50 Machine Gunner.  What a weapon!

Back to Christmas.  As a freelance photographer and journalist, I have had the great opportunity to take pictures of the arrival of Santa Claus at local Atlanta malls.  One in particular is Northlake Mall in the Tucker, Georgia area.  I have now done this for the past several years and you will have the opportunity to see some of these pictures.  To go along with the pictures from the Christmas events at local malls comes pictures of neighborhood Christmas lights, setting up Christmas trees in the home and the various venues that provide millions of lights for people from all over to visit and witness.  Some of the venues include:  Lake Lanier Islands, Callaway Gardens, The Atlanta Botanical Gardens (which I hope to visit this coming weekend and share my photos with you) and the Atlanta Motor Speedway which is new this year, just to name a few.

It does not matter what kind of camera that you have.  All you have to do is know how to work it and provide lasting memories of Christmas present and Christmas future.

Please enjoy the pictures from the Arrival of Santa Claus at Northlake Mall in Atlanta and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  I promise that from now on, I will be adding more to this blog as I continue to increase my time in photography and journalism.

God Bless and God Speed!

Fall Colors A Time to Have Camera in Hand

It is that time of year again. Fall is here and it’s one of my favorite times of the year. The colors of nature begin to change which gives photographers a slew of opportunities when it comes time to break out the camera and snap away at nature.

It is my intention to take the wife to to the mountains this fall and do some photography. I truly enjoy nature and the options that are presented when the seasons change.

I will continue to use my Canon 1000D as well as my new Fuji 14 megapixel camera which has many options for photography. It has a panoramic option that is really cool as well as the ability to do 30 minutes of video at any given time. It also has touch screen capability which really caught my attention when I bought the camera.

It looks like I will be heading to the Blueridge Mountains in Georgia as my Fall shoot.

I will also be offering Fall family shoots in local Atlanta parks including downtown Atlanta shoots. Both day and night makes the city of Atlanta a great place to shoot as it has a great cityscape with its architectural uniqueness.

Be checking in at my website: www.photostrybydavid.com for pictures of Fall2011 and specials for this fall for family photoshoots.

Thanks.

Photography The Way You Want It To Be

Photography is becoming an everyday sensation all over the world.  With the incorporation of smart phones with high end megapixel cameras along with the addition of video capability, anyone can snap a decent photo anytime they want to.  What happens next?  The photo(s) get uploaded to social media sites and WHAMMO! you are now a photographer.

There is nothing wrong with this because photography is a fun hobby and many have taken their photo taking prowess and turned it into a side business or full time business.  I personally have not seen anything bad from photographers that I know, but sometimes there are those who rely more on their editing talent then letting the camera do the work.  This is part of the business of photography and it is something that cannot be helped.

There is so much that we can do with our digital photos today that sometimes we over paint or add frames and backgrounds that never existed in the original photograph that our cameras produced.  I am one that likes to think that the camera is what matters unless you are a painter, artist or just a creative genius.

Photography is very much like the game of golf or tennis or the baseball bat, where we have a tendency when things go wrong to blame the club or the racket or the bat.  We never blame ourselves.  I blame myself time and time again because I do not watch how I have my camera set for the perfect picture.  I also know that I am not a perfectionist like I used to be and I am certainly not a professional when it comes to photography.  At the same time, I certainly enjoy it and currently it is more of a hobby as opposed to a profession because I am in the stage of building my portfolio.

As I mentioned earlier, the photos that I see from those photographers who are friends of mine on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, just to name a few have been great, some original and creative and others just gorgeous, especially when it comes to weddings or maternity shoots.  Speaking of weddings, do not look for me to be at yours or see any pictures from me, unless it is a backyard wedding and that it is not the most important thing when it comes to that special day.

Why will I not do weddings?  There are a couple of reasons.  One, I do not have the equipment or the man/woman power to do one successfully.  This does not mean I would not be a second shooter at one, but I will not be the one responsible for ruining the greatest day of one’s life.  Second, negotiating the price of big weddings can be very stressful and that is not something I really need in my life today.

So, this is what I am going to do for my loyal blog enthusiasts:  I have a link for you for someone who does fantastic work when it comes to weddings.  He is experienced

and he is very creative in his editing.  His name is Alexander Aleman of Lilburn, Georgia and his website is www.alexaleman.com.

The Moon

Here it is...the moon with some features, yet small. Photostry by David

So, if I am not a wedding photographer, what is it that I like so much about photography?  Simply put, just about everything is photogenic and I read this somewhere in a very large book about digital photography which included the history of photography.  My biggest passion when it comes to photography is something that is called landscape astrophotography.  This is the combining of the surrounding landscape with the night sky.  I have always interested in the study of astronomy and have had my share of telescopes.  What has been missing though is the camera to remember those moments of great viewing of the night sky.  This is one main reason why I even bought a mid range Canon digital camera when I did.

A picture that I took of the moon from a third floor balcony in Atlanta, Georgia. Photostry by David

The second form of photography that I enjoy is NATURE overall.  I really do believe that exterior photography really lets you remember what it was that caught your attention in the first place.  I love taking pictures of flowers, birds, butterflies and even sunrises and sunsets.  It is my ultimate passion to travel along the coastlines of the United States of America to photography lighthouses and seascapes.  I have a passion for the oceans of the world and eventually would like to have a photo book of the oceans and the coastlines.

A third form of photography that I have a passion for is architectural photography.  There are many forms of architecture in the world that will take your breath away.  When I was a teenager, I had the opportunity to study and travel in Israel and this afforded me the desire to become a photographer.  But in the late 1970s and early 1980s, all that I had in my arsenal were Kodak 110 cameras with a bag full of rolls of film.  I wish that I had a digital camera at the time or even a good 35 mm, but I did not.  Yet, at the same time, I had an opportunity to photograph sites that I may not ever get the chance to do again, even though it would be my desire to do so.

A fourth form of photography is what I call special event photography.  I am an independent journalist so I am also the photographer when I submit my stories.

I am an independent contractor for the Examiner.com and you can read my stories and see some of my special event photography at the following two links:

http://www.examiner.com/military-history-6-in-atlanta/david-brown

http://www.examiner.com/event-photography-in-atlanta/david-brown

I do not make a great deal of money as an independent journalist and/or photographer, but I will say this, “I certainly enjoy the passions of writing and photography as w

ell as drawing and painting and I know that someday, the Good Lord will provide for me and my family.”

For those professional photographers out there, keep up the great work.  You know who you are and I appreciate all of the input and the words that I have received from you.

Welcome to Photostry by David

My first thought for this blog site is how not to bore my readers to insanity.  Well, I truly feel that what I have to say in my welcome message is going to be diverse in direction and thought.  So, sit back and enjoy my blog posts and pictures and soon I hope to have video for you as well.

Photostry is a word that combines photo and story.  As is commonly said about photographs is that  a picture is worth a thousand words.  This is true as behind every photo there is likely a story.  Hence the name Photostry.

At the same time, I enjoy writing immensely.  I wrote my first short story back when I was 14 years old.  It was a science fiction, my favorite genre to date.  It was submitted to Isaac Asimov Magazine but not published.  I did get a letter from the editor who said the story was a great idea but that I was young and will one day be published.

I am self-published as I wrote a book about my father’s Army unit while serving in Korea (1950-1953).  It is on sale at Lulu.com.

Well, since 1982, I was extremely interested in photography as well.  while serving in a college Army ROTC unit, I spent time preparing to be a combat photographer.  However, while on a training exercise at Fort Benning, Georgia and disembarking from a Huey Chopper, I dropped my camera and was transferred to an M-60 machine gun.  A lot different in weight and very noisy compared to a small Nikon EF 35 mm camera.

So goes the early years of writing and photography.

My next go around was in 2001 when I got married.  I owned a Panasonic Camcorder and thought I would try my hand at movie making.  I lost interest in movies, so I decided still photography was my best bet.  My first digital camera was a Sony point and shoot and it was fun and it took great pictures and also did video as well.  Unfortunately, the screen went bad and it eventually went totally south on me and it sits in a storage box collecting dust.  The following Christmas, Santa brought me a Panasonic digital camera and it worked fine for a while until it went south on me as you guessed it, the screen went bad and I could no longer take pictures as I could not see the end result.

So, I went back to writing and dropped photography for a couple of years.  Then I’m 2009, after my mother passed away, I decided to go back into photography and purchased a Canon EOS Rebel DSLR 10.1 Megapixel Camera that to this day I have enjoyed immensely.  I love taken many different pictures with this great digital camera, yet, I still have a great deal of side items on my wish list which includes accessories for this camera and then, another Canon camera body.

Since I have had the camera, I have had the opportunity to take many great photos of nature, special events in the Atlanta area, architecture, cars from the past and the present, sunrises and sunsets and even stars in the sky.  What is so nice to know is that all of this, all that  I have taken pictures of are all from God.  He created all that I have photographed and they have all been blessings in one way or another.

Now that you have learned about my photography, and there will be more about this in the coming blogs, I want to talk to you about some other things that I am involved in and that I enjoy as well.

I am part of the internet marketing consulting business.  Let me say right off the top that I what I do is not part of any get rich quick scheme.  What I do is look for certain programs that will help me advertise my website, do surveys and free lance write.  I do this because I enjoy it and I truly believe that with God’s help, I will be successful in all that I do.  I am one who wants to be both humanly successful as well as spiritually successful and not particularly in this order.

Another great thing that I am involved in is an internet Christian Ministry with my best friend and Brother-in-Christ Alex Aleman.  It is called Mission Lighthouse Ministry and you can view our website at:  www.missionlighthouseministry.org.  Visit the website and you will see a lot of great things happening in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I would like to end this post with a number of links to programs that I am involved in and to some of my writing projects that I am working on.  I hope you enjoy these links and there will be more as time goes on.

Thank you for visiting and I look forward to your return.  The links are listed below.

God Bless and God Speed,
